Properties

Colorless, transparent liquid with a fruity aroma. Miscible with ethanol and ether, soluble in most hydrocarbon compounds, and soluble in about 120 parts water at 25°C. Its vapor is heavier than air, with a relative density of 0.8826. Freezing point -77°C. Boiling point 125-126°C, specific heat capacity (20°C) 1.91 KJ/(kgK). Refractive index 1.3951. Flash point (closed cup) 22°C. Flammable, ignition point 421°C. Viscosity (20°C) 0.734 mPas. The vapor can form explosive mixtures with air, with explosion limits of 1.4%-8.0% (by volume). Irritating. High concentrations have anesthetic properties.

Uses

Commonly used organic solvent. Used for the determination of thallium, tin, and tungsten. Used for the determination of molybdenum and rhenium. Antibiotic extractant. Used as a solvent for nitrocellulose and lacquer. It is commonly used as a fruit flavoring, primarily in the formulation of banana, raspberry, strawberry, and cream flavors. It is also used as a solvent, extractant, and dehydrating agent. In the manufacture of this product's dry cleaning solvent, it is used as a solvent.
