Physical Properties
Xylene is a colorless, transparent liquid. It has a characteristic aromatic hydrocarbon odor, is flammable, and miscible with anhydrous ethanol, ether, and many other organic solvents.
It is miscible with ethanol, chloroform, or ether in any proportion, but insoluble in water. Its boiling point is 137–140°C. Xylene is classified as a low-toxicity chemical substance; the American Conference of American Industrial Hygienes (ACGIH) classifies it as Group A4, meaning it lacks evidence of carcinogenicity in humans and animals. It is found in plastics, fuels, rubber, additives in various coatings, adhesives, waterproofing materials, and can also originate from the combustion gases of fuels and tobacco.
Safety Measures
Store in a cool, well-ventilated place, away from sources of ignition and heat. Avoid storing or transporting it together with oxidizers. Do not use tools that may generate sparks.
Fire Extinguishing Methods: Foam, carbon dioxide, dry powder, sand.
Applications and Uses
Widely used as a solvent in the coatings, resins, dyes, and inks industries; used as a synthetic monomer or solvent in the pharmaceutical, explosives, and pesticide industries; also used as a component of high-octane gasoline and is an important raw material in organic chemicals. It can also be used to remove asphalt from car bodies. In hospital pathology departments, it is mainly used for clearing and dewaxing tissue sections.
